The Benefits of Joining Citizens:mk

The primary benefit of joining a broad based community alliance is that it provides access to power - through joining and working with other diverse community institutions -to effect and change our neighbourhoods and city for the common good of Milton Keynes. To put this more tangibly, a Citizens:mk institution can expect the following benefits from their membership:

1) LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY ORGANISING TRAINING

Membership gives local institutions free places on residential (5 days held twice a year) and non-residential (1 or 2 days held three times a year) Leadership and Community Organising training courses. The courses develop the skills and confidence of individuals to put their values and beliefs into action in an effective way in their community group. The trainings cover topics and concepts including leadership, one-to-one meetings, self-interest, strategy, running effective meetings, power analysis, and other requested topics. The training equips members with the tools to become effective community leaders to bring about change within a broad based organising context.

 2) DEVELOPING & PARTICIPATING IN NEIGHBOURHOOD AND CITY-WIDE CAMPAIGNS

Citizens:mk is beginning to formulate its Agenda for the year, taking in issues from public transport, housing, safety, young people and the development of our city. As a member, you have an institutional vote at strategy meetings and annual assemblies where decisions are taken on campaigns and actions, as well as the right to propose actions and campaigns. Citizens:mk works on issues that are for the common good of the people of Milton Keynes and their communities and cannot support partisan political campaigns, either nationally or internationally.

3) CONNECTIONS TO OTHER LOCAL INSTITUTIONS

Citizens:mk’s network of local institutions includes diverse faith congregations, schools, ethnic and community associations. Citizens:mk brings people together across ethnic, religious, and economic lines, and will create opportunities to build good relationships with neighbours from different backgrounds working together for the common good.

4) PROFESSIONAL STAFF WORKING WITH YOUR INSTITUTION ON ISSUES AFFECTING YOUR MEMBERS

Citizens:mk are dedicated to working with your institution to find and develop new leaders and to organise campaigns to address problems affecting local people, your institution and the wider community. The organiser is available all the time for consultations, and will regularly review with you your institution’s membership.
